COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Michigan St. Surprised at Chicago

Brian Hill’s three-point basket snapped a 52-52 tie and unheralded Illinois Chicago went on to upset 25th-ranked Michigan State, 65-57, Tuesday night at Chicago.

Corwin Hunt scored 19 points and Brian Hill had 17 to lead Illinois Chicago (4-2), which forced Michigan State (6-1) into 24 turnovers.

The Flames build a 13-point lead in the first 10 minutes, but Michigan State rallied and closed to within 34-32 at halftime.

St. John’s 68, Fordham 60--Boo Harvey, Billy Singleton and Malik Sealy each scored 19 points at New York as the No. 18 Redmen downed the Rams for the 21st consecutive time.

The last time Fordham (4-3) beat St. John’s (7-2) was Feb. 13, 1971. St. John’s Coach Lou Carnesecca has not lost to the Rams in 24 games.

Andre McClendon’s basket gave Fordham a 48-48 tie with 12:29 left, but Singleton scored the next four points and set up the another basket as the Redmen went on a 7-0 run. Fordham never got closer than five points the rest of the way.

Dan O’Sullivan scored 18 points for Fordham.

Coppin State 70, Maryland 63--Reggie Isaac had 24 points and Larry Stewart scored six of his 18 in the final 90 seconds as the Eagles surprised the Terrapins at College Park, Md.

Coppin State (5-2) led by as many as 17 points in the first half, but Maryland (4-3) rallied to take a 60-59 lead on Teyon McCoy’s three-point basket with 2:35 left. The Terrapins had a 63-62 lead, but the Eagles scored the last eight points--six by Stewart.

McCoy scored 20 points for Maryland.

Temple 74, St. Joseph’s 54--Mik Kilgore scored 15 points and the Owls trounced the Hawks in an Atlantic 10 Conference game at Philadelphia, giving Coach John Chaney his 400th victory.
