Thomas to Miss Title Game Because of Fight at School

Carson High cornerback Clayvand Thomas, the Colts’ interception leader and a member of The Times South Bay All-Star football team, has been suspended for tonight’s L.A. City Section 4-A title game because of a fight at school, Coach Gene Vollnogle said.

A 6-foot, 175-pound junior, Thomas was also held out of last week’s 58-7 semifinal win over Crenshaw because of his Dec. 5 fight with a Carson student outside a classroom, Vollnogle said.

Thomas, who was given the option of transferring to another school, cannot participate in any sport until he removes all Ds and Unsatisfactory marks from his report card, Vollnogle said. Thomas also plays basketball.

“His parents decided he’s going to stay here and get his act together,” Vollnogle said. “I think he’s on his way. The good thing is that he’s not a senior.”

Vollnogle said Thomas could become eligible in mid-January at the end of the current grading period.

Considered one of Carson’s top players and a college prospect, Thomas has six interceptions this season, including three returned for touchdowns.
