Sockers Will Name Geyer Assistant Coach, Source Says

Erich Geyer, a crowd favorite when he played for the Sockers from 1981-85, will be named assistant coach today, a source close to the team said.

Geyer will take over for Keith Weller, who was named coach of the Tacoma Stars on Dec. 5.

Geyer, 39, coached the Chicago Sting for 77 games between 1986-88 after retiring from playing.

In selecting Geyer, the Sockers decided against using a current player as an assistant in a part-time capacity. Geyer will handle all assistant coach responsibilities, including overseeing the reserve team and training the injured players while the Sockers are on the road.
