THE SIDELINES : Germanys to Hold Swim Talks
The Swimming Federations of East Germany and West Germany will hold talks next month on closer cooperation between the two sides, the official East German press agency ADN reported today.
ADN said the talks would be held in West Berlin on Jan. 5, to iron out “concrete agreements” on possible exchange of trainers and medical aides, joint controls on doping and commercial aspects of the sport.
The brief report said the meeting was set up by the chief trainer of East Germany’s Swimming Federation, Wolfgang Richter, who met with West German federation officials in Stuttgart over the weekend.
Swimming traditionally has been one of the premier sports in the mighty East German sports machine, and West Germany also has several top swimmers.
