WORLD : Fed Up Wife Joins Opposition
The wife of a Japanese member of the Diet (Parliament) said today she is so fed up with the leadership of her husband’s ruling party that she will run for election herself on an independent ticket.
“Please don’t call me Mrs.,” said 47-year-old Makiko Hamada, the wife of Takujiro Hamada, a representative in the lower house for the Liberal Democratic Party. “Call me Makiko,” the Tokyo University literature graduate told reporters.
Makiko said she has had enough of money politics, which have embroiled the LDP in its biggest scandal since it came to power more than 30 years ago.
Makiko, who once worked as a Japan Airlines stewardess, is apparently running against her husband’s wishes. His aides were not available for comment.
