Florida quarterbacks Kyle Morris and Shane Matthews, suspended in midseason for gambling on college football games, will be reinstated on the team next month, the school announced.
Athletic Director Bill Arnsparger said the players, declared ineligible Oct. 16, will return to the squad Jan. 8, have their scholarships reinstated for the second semester and participate in spring practice. He also said the school will request that the NCAA Eligibility Committee restore their eligibility for competition for the 1990 season.
Morris, a redshirt sophomore who led Florida to a 5-1 start, and Matthews, a freshman who was the team’s No. 2 quarterback, were suspended for the season after admitting they violated an NCAA rule by betting on college games. Two walk-ons, Brady Ackerman and G.A. Mangus, also were suspended for an undisclosed NCAA violation.
Arnsparger said Mangus and Ackerman would be free to rejoin the football program at the start of the second semester.
