Pepperdine Loses Late Lead, Falls to Louisiana Tech, 76-73

Anthony Dade scored a game-high 19 points and Reggie Gibbs had 17, including four free throws in the final 30 seconds, to lead Louisiana Tech to a 76-73 victory over Pepperdine in the first round of the Far West basketball tournament Wednesday night.

Pepperdine (4-4), led by Dexter Howard’s 17 points, held a 39-27 halftime advantage.

The Bulldogs (8-1), earning their fifth consecutive victory, chipped away until they took a 65-61 lead with 6:51 left to play.

With 3:33 to play, Pepperdine regained the lead, 69-68, on Howard’s 10-foot jump shot. The Waves outscored Louisiana Tech, 8-3, in a brief burst, with Howard getting six of the Pepperdine total in the run.

The lead changed hands twice before Dade’s rebound basket with 52 seconds left put Louisiana Tech ahead, 72-71. Gibbs then sank four free throws for the Bulldogs, giving them a 76-71 lead with nine seconds remaining.

Shann Ferch added 16 points and Craig Davis had 13 for Pepperdine. Tom Lewis was held to three points.

In the earlier game, Gary Payton scored 29 points and Earl Martin had 21 as No. 23 Oregon State defeated Boston University, 86-66.

Payton had 17 points in the first half for Oregon State (7-2).
