Center Jennifer Sullivan, the Sunset League’s most valuable player last season, was in foul trouble and backup center Tracy Wolfe was hampered by the flu, so Ocean View High School needed someone to handle the scoring Thursday.

Fabiola Nunez did, scoring a game-high 24 points as Ocean View defeated Valencia, 70-62, in the quarterfinals of the Marina girls’ basketball tournament.

“It had to be Fab,” Ocean View Coach Ollie Martin said. “She did a great job.”

Sullivan picked up three fouls early and missed almost the entire second quarter. Nunez’s six second-quarter points helped the Seahawks keep pace with Valencia. The score was tied at halftime, 29-29.

Sullivan returned in the third quarter to score 12 of her 20 points.

Ocean View (11-0) got its fast break going and, with the help of six Valencia turnovers, outscored the Tigers, 22-4, to end the suspense with a 53-35 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

“We lost a little intensity,” Valencia Coach Kim Beckhart said. “I don’t know why but we got a little scared and we were missing our shots. When you can’t make those inside little baskets, you’re not going to win many games.”

Hollie Keeton scored 19 and Sig Lo added 16 to lead Valencia (5-5).
