GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Edison Teams Up to Beat Lakewoodin Marina Semifinal

Edison High School served notice that it is not just a one-person team in its 56-54 semifinal victory over Lakewood Friday in the Marina girls’ basketball tournament.

The Chargers (8-2) also proved that they can battle with the biggest. Edison doesn’t have a starter that stands more than 5-feet-10, but the Chargers outscrapped Lakewood, which starts Melissa Gower (6-2), Jackie Hatten (6-2) and Charon Johnson (6-0).

Edison’s three-point shooter and leading scorer, Debbie Fischer, hit only five of 20 shots (including four three-pointers) to finish with 17 points. But for the second consecutive game, three other Chargers scored in double figures: Erika Miller (11 points) and Melanie Iwamasa and Laura Vinch (10 each).

“When we can win with our star doing that it shows the character of our team,” Charger Coach Philip Abraham said. “It shows we don’t live and die by what Debbie does.”

When Lakewood (10-2) pounded the ball inside it was successful but Edison’s shifting defenses forced Lakewood into turnovers and poor shot selection.

Gower led Lakewood with 21 points. Hatten added 12 and Johnson 10.

In other games:

Ocean View 64, Hart 57--Ocean View got hot from the perimeter in the fourth quarter with nine unanswered points to open a 55-46 lead and eventually pull away from Hart (9-3) in the other semifinal.

Despite a 24-point performance by Hart’s 6-3 center Sara Wilson, the Seahawks stayed close with their full-court pressure. It was the 13th victory without a loss for Ocean View. Tracy Wolfe led Ocean View with 20 points.

Estancia 66, Katella 63 (OT)--The Eagles outscored Katella, 7-4, in overtime with Patrice Lumpkin scoring six of her 27 points in the extra period. Ruth Harker led Katella (3-8) with 14.

L.B. Wilson 44, Mater Dei 39--Joanna Humphrey led Wilson (4-9) with 12 points in a consolation game. Joan Maurer had eight for the Monarchs (3-8).

Marina 62, Huntington Beach 57--In a consolation semifinal, Melissa Sortino scored 26 points, including three three-pointers for the Vikings (10-3). Jana Davis had 23 for the Oilers (5-7).

La Quinta 66, Foothill 42--In the other consolation semifinal, Heather Branon led the Aztecs (8-2) with 24 and Amy Jalewalia added 22. Shannon Ebert had 12 for Foothill (4-7).

Loara 45, Mission Viejo 42--Tracy Titus scored 15 and Lisa Nakazono 12 for Loara (5-7). Carrie Burt had 17 for the Diablos (9-5).

Fountain Valley 59, Valencia 49--Jennifer Barbaro led the Barons (9-4) with 21 points. Hollie Keeton had 22 and Sig Lo 17 for Valencia (6-5).

In the Costa Mesa tournament:

Tustin 64, Westminster 38--Center Jennifer Coombs scored 21 points to lead Tustin.

San Clemente 61, Trabuco Hills 30--Wendy Stewart had 14 points and Wendy Moon added 12 to pace San Clemente. Shelly Calhoun led Trabuco Hills with 13 points.

Cypress 68, Corona del Mar 24--Forward Stacie Kosaka scored 25 points to lead Cypress.

Woodbridge 46, Dana Hills 33--Tami Williams had 16 points and six steals, and Leslie Rathbun 10 points and seven assists to lead Woodbridge (7-2). Dana Hills (7-3) was led by Erin Shimenick, who had 14 points.

North Torrance 78, Santa Ana 36--Center Laura Collins scored 22 points to pace North Torrance.

Capistrano Valley 36, Santa Margarita 22--Peggy Rivas accounted for 10 points to pace Capistrano Valley. Santa Margarita’s Kristen Mulligan led all scorers with 15.

Costa Mesa 72, Irvine 22--Guards Olivia DiCamille and Thuy Nguyen scored 14 and 13 points, respectively, to pace Costa Mesa (4-4) over winless Irvine.

In the Orange Glen tournament:

Rancho Buena Vista 55, University 49--Forward Shawna Edge scored 17 points to pace Rancho Buena Vista in the semifinal game. University forward Denise Gandara led all scorers with 30 points.

In a nonleague game:

Orange 48, Orange Lutheran 44--Despite missing all 25 of its fourth-quarter shots, Orange won by converting eight of 14 free throws--Jennifer Trotter made four free throws in the last minute--in the fourth quarter. Orange Lutheran (1-5) was led by Pam Marty, who had 19 points and whose shot tied the score, 44-44, with 2 minutes 15 seconds left. But with 1:34 remaining Lutheran’s fourth player fouled out, and Lutheran had only eight players, so only four played the rest of the way. Orange (6-4) was led by Nicole Champion, whose 21 points led all scorers, and Laurie Sallinger, who had 10 points and 15 steals.
