$60,000 House Fire Blamed on Arson

A fire at a Glendale house last weekend was caused by arson, Fire Department officials said.

“It was started by a couple of gallons of gasoline in a rear bedroom,” said John Orr, Glendale fire investigator.

About one-quarter of the house burned before firefighters could put out the flames Saturday night. The fire caused about $60,000 in damage, Orr said.

Orr said no suspects have been identified. He said the investigation is “focusing on the fact that the home’s owner was involved in a recent dispute with the city.” The property owner, Paul Marino, was denied a permit to expand the 1,500-square-foot house to 3,300 square feet at a Dec. 27 design review hearing after neighbors complained that the second-story addition to the house in the 1600 block of Vista Drive would dwarf neighboring dwellings.

The house next door to Marino’s, which is under construction, was the rallying point for a neighborhood protest last summer that led to passage of an ordinance to limit the size of single houses in the city.
