Chula Vista
A 3 1/2-year-old Chula Vista boy was accidentally run over and killed by his father, who was backing the family truck out of the driveway, police said Thursday.
The accident occurred just before 5 p.m. Wednesday when Christopher Butcher ran behind the truck as his father, Larry, was backing up. A wall separating the family’s driveway and a neighbor’s property obstructed Butcher’s view, police said.
As Butcher ran to the aid of his son, the truck continued to roll, police said, striking a car across the street. It was unclear whether that added to the boy’s injuries.
The child was taken to Chula Vista Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“Larry went crazy last night,” a neighbor said. “We tried to make him understand that it was not really his fault, and it was just an accident, but he kept blaming himself.”
No charges are planned, police said.
