Freddie Bradley and Sean Cheevers of Moorpark College each ranked at the top of categories in final national junior college football statistics.

Bradley, a second-team All-American running back, scored 23 regular-season touchdowns and averaged 13.8 points a game to finish No. 1 in scoring average. The freshman was 13th in the country in rushing with 126.6 yards per game and ninth in all-purpose running with 169.6 yards.

Cheevers, a sophomore, was the leading scorer among kickers. He made 40 extra points and 12 of 15 field-goal attempts to average 7.6 points. He also topped active kickers in career scoring average (7.4 points).

Moorpark sophomore quarterback Jayson Merrill averaged 10.7 completions a game to rank 41st, and he was 31st in passing efficiency with a 121.5 rating.

Valley defensive back Sam Edwards and Glendale quarterback Ronnie Lopez were the only other Valley-area players to break into the top 10. Edwards tied for seventh in interceptions with 0.80 a game, and Lopez ranked ninth with a 136.0 efficiency rating.

Other Valley-area players receiving mention included Pat Lynch of Glendale, 42nd in receiving (4.3 catches per game); Tony Esposito of Valley, 12th in punting (40.5 yards per kick); Jamie Grossman of Pierce, 17th in passing (15.0 completions per game); and Donald Dozier of Valley, 52nd in scoring (7.0 points per game).

Moorpark (9-2) was ranked seventh in team offense (423.7 yards) and sixth in team defense (183.7).

Glendale (5-4-1) finished 21st in offense (397.5), and Valley (5-5-1) was 35th in defense (263.5).

Marty Slimak, a former outfielder at College of the Canyons and UC Santa Barbara, has been hired as an assistant baseball coach at Cal Lutheran.

Slimak, 34, was an assistant at Santa Ynez High last season. He will be responsible for pitchers at Cal Lutheran, Coach Rich Hill said.

Montclair Prep has added University of Michigan graduate assistant Kevin Kolcheff, 26, to its football coaching staff for next fall, the school announced.

Kolcheff coached Wolverine special teams for three years. At Montclair Prep, the former Central Michigan quarterback will coach running backs and special teams.

Emilee Klein of Studio City has been ranked eighth in the nation for 1989 among junior women golfers by Golf Digest.

Klein, 15, a sophomore at Notre Dame High, was the youngest female on the magazine’s top 10 list. In 1988, at 14, she became the youngest golfer to win the California women’s amateur championship.
