Heavy thundershowers doused the western San Fernando Valley and eastern Ventura County, bringing with them periods of hail as the weekend’s storm system slowly moved eastward Sunday.

Pea-size hail fell for about half an hour in several communities--including Northridge, Agoura Hills and Chatsworth. And the heavy rain that fell in sheets in some areas was preceded by thunder and lightning. The torrent stopped just after the hailstorm ended.

“It looked like it was snowing before the rain melted the hail,” one resident said.

By late Sunday afternoon, the storm had dropped 0.18 of an inch of rain at the Civic Center, bringing the season total to 1.90 inches, more than 4 inches below the 5.95 inches that would be normal for the date.

Other areas had more rain, including Woodland Hills, 0.97 inches, San Diego, 0.92, San Bernardino, 0.68, Santa Barbara, 0.62, and Montebello, 0.52.

Los Angeles police and fire officials said they had no reports of weather-related traffic accidents, damage or power outages during the day Sunday.

But rains contributed to the collapse of an awning at an East Los Angeles mini-mall, Los Angeles County fire officials said.

A man and a woman were injured in the incident in the 6000 block of Whittier Boulevard, authorities said. The man suffered a broken leg, and the woman had a minor head injury. Both were taken to County-USC Medical Center.

The showers and thunderstorms that struck the San Fernando Valley on Sunday were expected to move through coastal areas during the night, bringing a few hours of rain.

A snow advisory was issued for the Southern California mountains Sunday night. Snow was expected above the 5,000-foot level.

In the Los Angeles Basin, sunny and partly cloudy skies are expected to prevail today and Tuesday before giving way to another storm system that is expected to bring moderate rains on Wednesday, meteorologists said.

Half an inch to an inch of rainfall is expected in the area, said Rick Dittmann, a meteorologist for WeatherData Inc., which provides forecasts for The Times.

Los Angeles temperatures are expected to reach highs in the mid-60s today with some afternoon clouds and 15-m.p.h. winds, said Dittmann. Sunday’s Civic Center high reached 64.

“There’ll be some clouds, but otherwise it’s expected to be a nice day,” he said.
