Slowdown Prompts Apple to Cut Costs: Apple Computer Inc. announced cost-cutting measures in response to a business slowdown that has been more pronounced than the company and analysts expected. In a letter to employees, Apple Chairman John A. Sculley said the measures include a reduction in the number of staff through attrition, cutbacks in hiring and the transfer of some workers. Apple spokeswoman Carleen LeVasseur said demand for the company’s computers has slowed not only in the United States but also overseas. She said revenue and profit for the fiscal first quarter, due to be announced later this week, did not reach original expectations.
