Haskell Ramp to Close for Ventura Freeway Widening

The Haskell Avenue on-ramp of the westbound Ventura Freeway will be closed for seven months starting Wednesday as work gets under way on a $36.9-million widening of the San Fernando Valley’s main east-west artery, the state Department of Transportation announced Monday.

The freeway, which carries about 280,000 vehicles daily, varies in width from eight to 10 lanes as it crosses the Valley.

The 22-month widening will expand it to a uniform 10 lanes from Topanga Canyon Boulevard in Woodland Hills to Universal City, a Caltrans spokesman said.

The new lanes also will be extended south on the Hollywood Freeway to Lankershim Boulevard. The freeway is already 10 lanes south of Lankershim.

New lanes will be created by narrowing the existing 12-foot-wide lanes by one foot each and by using part of the median.

To reduce the impact on traffic, most work will be done at night, Caltrans officials said.
