Surplus Food

Twenty-five years ago I lived off of food stamps and dated produce which the corner market threw out. Today, out of compassion for some less well-to-do friends, I stop at my corner market to select dated produce for them.

The other day during my foraging, an employee of the market poured hot oil and fat in the area I was searching. Next he asked me not to forage while they were there. He then proceeded to pour bleach on the remainder of the discarded goods. This misguided soul also had some disparaging remarks to make when I told him there was good food there for the homeless and hungry.

When are we (citizens), market managers and owners not going to tolerate this attitude? How can civic leaders look the other way when looking for ways to feed the hungry?
