A 70-year-old woman who was mauled by her grandson’s two pit bull terriers as she tried to feed them died early today, authorities said.

“Both her arms had been chewed to the bone,” said County-USC Medical Center spokeswoman Adelaida De La Cerda. Surgeons had amputated Marjee Lilly’s left arm and operated on her right arm Tuesday.

The dogs mauled Mrs. Lilly in the kitchen of her grandson’s home, breaking off the attack when the grandson returned, police said.

The grandson, Clarence Hubbard, 34, told officials he has owned the 14-month-old dogs, which weigh 45 to 50 pounds, since they were puppies and they had never attacked before. The animals were taken to an animal shelter, and Hubbard said he wants them destroyed.

A police spokesman said it isn’t illegal to own pit bulls, and the animals were on private property. “We see no criminal aspect here.”
