Mexico Gets Some Consolation, Defeats Argentina at Coliseum, 2-0

Share

Mexico will not play in this summer’s World Cup of soccer in Italy, but it earned a small measure of satisfaction Wednesday night with a 2-0 victory over defending champion Argentina before 23,675 at the Coliseum.

It was the Argentines’ third game this year without a victory, or even a goal. But that presumably is of little concern to them, considering they are playing without several players who are committed to Europeon club teams. That includes Diego Maradona, who plays for Napoli in the Italian league.

Still, it was a good team that was beaten by the Mexicans, who have been rebuilding since they were disqualified from the World Cup for using overage players in a youth tournament.

Midfielder Jose Manuel de la Torre had assists on both goals.

Carlos Munoz scored the first in the 34th minute of the first half on a header after Torre’s corner kick sliced through the defense in front of the goal.

Torre and Luis Roberto Alves combined for the second goal 15 minutes into the second half.
