Children’s Museum to Give Youngsters Origami Pointers

The Japanese art of paper folding, origami, will be the focus of a workshop at the Children’s Museum at La Habra at noon on Jan. 20.

Terrell Hayes, a unicyclist, mime, juggler and origami expert, will introduce origami to the first 30 children ages 7 and older (or age 6 with a parent). The class will make a crane or sailboat, and more complex creations will be on view in the gallery.

The class is free with a museum admission: $1.50 for children 2 and older and $2 for adults. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday at 301 S. Euclid St. in La Habra. Reservations are needed for groups of 10 or more. Information: (213) 905-9793.

Sata Fine Art, a gallery specializing in the work of established and emerging contemporary artists from Europe, Asia and the United States, will open Jan. 27 in Costa Mesa with an exhibit of large-scale prints by Joseph Albers, Sam Francis, Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Motherwell and Kenneth Noland.

The gallery, which has affiliates in Tokyo and the Burgundy region of France, will mount six shows annually. A secondary exhibit space will be devoted to the art and life of Isamu Noguchi, the late Japanese artist who created the “California Scenario” sculpture garden in the South Coast Metro complex.

After the opening reception (7 to 10 p.m.), regular hours at the gallery will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. The gallery is at 655 Anton Blvd. Information: (714) 556-3646.

The Orange Coast College Community Service Office is offering “How to Market Your Art in the 1990s,” a three-hour class for artists, on Jan. 31 at 6:30 p.m.

Lecturer Michelle Carter is a public relations and marketing consultant for artists and galleries. Topics include “Developing a Winning Strategy to Attract and Retain Collectors,” “Promoting Your Art and Yourself for Maximum Visibility” and “Effective Pricing and Placement.”

The Bowers Museum will present its third annual free bonsai celebration Feb. 24 and 25.

Sponsored by Kofu Bonsai Kai, a 13-year-old California bonsai organization, the exhibition will present trees prepared by experts in the art of the miniaturized plant as well as suiseki displays (traditional Japanese stone arrangements). Demonstrations in preparing bonsai will be held each day at 2 p.m.
