Los Angeles police detectives were searching Thursday for two men who attacked two other men with a hammer and screwdriver when one of them refused to get off a pay telephone in Wilmington on Wednesday, authorities said.

Marcial Galdamez, 39, of Van Nuys was in critical condition Thursday at County-USC Medical Center after being struck several times in the head with a hammer. Jose Santos, 26, who was stabbed in the arm with a screwdriver, was treated and released at Permanente Medical Center in Harbor City.

Galdamez was using the phone at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Figueroa Street to get directions from a friend, police said. Santos had accompanied him to the phone.
