Two motorists were killed Thursday in separate accidents in the San Fernando Valley when they lost control of their speeding cars and crashed into utility poles, Los Angeles police said.

Scott C. Stevenson, 32, a Calabasas chiropractor, was killed at 2 a.m. at Valley Circle Boulevard and Ostronic Drive in Woodland Hills, Officer Richard Breidenthal said.

The accident occurred while a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was attempting to stop Stevenson’s speeding car, police said.

Deputy James Smith told police that he saw Stevenson’s car leave the Ventura Freeway at 70 m.p.h. and speed north on Valley Circle, Breidenthal said.

Smith turned on his patrol car’s flashing lights and followed the speeding car until it crashed into a utility pole at Ostronic Drive. Stevenson was dead.

About an hour later, another motorist was killed when his car struck a power pole near Van Nuys Airport, Breidenthal said.

The 40-year-old North Hollywood man, whose name was not released until relatives could be notified, was driving west on Roscoe Boulevard at an estimated 70 m.p.h. when he lost control and struck a pole at Hayvenhurst Avenue. He was killed on impact.
