A transient apparently shot and wounded his former girlfriend early Saturday at a Highland Park apartment they once shared and then killed himself, authorities said.

Robert Joseph Quinn, 54, was found dead at the scene by police with a gunshot wound to the head, said Lt. Dave Waterman of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Northeast Division.

Sharon Amaniera, 44, was shot in the face. She was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, where she was listed in fair condition.

Neighbors of the apartment complex at 6270 Mt. Angelus Drive heard gunshots shortly after midnight. Hope Morales, 40, who lives across the hall from Amaniera, said the woman “came knocking and yelling at my door that she was shot.”

“I saw blood and I panicked,” Morales said. “I just panicked.”

Morales said Quinn moved out of the apartment “quite a while ago” and hadn’t reappeared until Friday afternoon, when Morales went to visit Amaniera and saw the two inside her apartment.

Late Saturday morning, bloodstains could be seen on the upstairs landing in the two-story peach-colored stucco building.

The apartment manager, Richard Marcos, described Quinn and Amaniera as a “quiet couple.”

“We never had any problems with them,” he said.

Authorities said Quinn is survived by a son. His last known residence was a hotel in downtown Los Angeles, they added.

“He seemed at the time of death to be living the life style of a transient,” a coroner’s official said.
