THE SIDELINES : Gervin Allowed to Stay in Spain
A San Antonio judge today agreed to extend the terms of probation for former San Antonio Spurs guard George Gervin, who faced arrest for leaving the country without telling the judge.
Gervin, on probation after his conviction last fall on a charge of driving while intoxicated, went to Spain on Jan. 14, in apparent violation of his probation, to begin playing for the Spanish Basketball Assn.
Although Gervin, 37, was allowed to travel, he was not supposed to leave the country. County Court-at-Law Judge Tony Ferro issued a warrant for Gervin’s arrest Friday after learning that the player was overseas.
Today, Ferro agreed to allow Gervin to play overseas but kept the terms of his probation intact while he is there. Gervin is to report regularly to his probation officer via mail.
