Montebello : Heacock Becomes President of Revamped School Board

Share

A veteran member of the Montebello Unified School District board has been selected as president. Darrell H. Heacock, who has been a board member for 12 years, was chosen as president at last month’s meeting. Arthur M. Chavez was selected as vice president and Willard G. Yamaguchi will be board clerk.

Heacock said overcrowding is the most crucial problem in the 30,000-student district, which has 27 schools. Portable classrooms have been added at each school to accommodate the overflow of students, but the district needs to build a new elementary school, Heacock said. The district has purchased land on the corner of Garfield and Gage avenues in Bell Gardens, he said, but the state has not provided funding to begin construction.
