Rites Saturday for John Gibson, 82, Former San Juan Treasurer

Memorial services for John Carroll Gibson, an 18-year San Juan Capistrano resident who was the city’s treasurer for 12 years, will be Saturday in Capistrano Beach.

Gibson died Friday at the Lake Forest Nursing Center of complications from diabetes and a series of strokes. He was 82.

A native of Clarion, Pa., and a graduate of Pasadena High School, Gibson worked for the Bank of America in several Southern California cities for 36 years. He began in the banking business by founding, with his partner Frank D. Hevener, the Citizens Bank of Laguna Beach in 1931. That bank was purchased by Bank of America in 1936.

Gibson lived in Laguna Beach, where he was a member of the Board of Education and Lions Club, until 1941, when he moved to Pasadena. After he retired in 1972, he and his wife, Trudi, moved to San Juan Capistrano. Gibson became a member of the Rotary Club of San Juan Capistrano, the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce, and the Dana Point Yacht Club.

He is survived by his wife and four children: David Gibson of Avalon, Marjorie Podell of Moraga, Dr. Don Gibson of Villa Park and Carol Fraley of San Francisco. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m Saturday at Palisades United Methodist Church in Capistrano Beach. A private, family funeral also is scheduled.
