The list of 37 players the Raiders will protect from Plan B free agency goes to the NFL office today, and running back Marcus Allen’s name will be on it.

Middle linebacker Jerry Robinson also will be protected.

There had been speculation that Allen’s injuries and problems with Al Davis, and Robinson’s age might keep them off the list. But Coach Art Shell said Wednesday they’ll be on it.

“That’s not true,” Shell said of the speculation.

“Those are two valuable guys. You can’t afford to let guys like that get out there.”

Allen played only eight games after suffering a knee injury. He is about to turn 30 and made $1.1 million last season. Davis was unhappy about his holdout last summer, but Shell, who admires Allen and knows the respect the players have for him, reportedly argued for him.

Allen’s contract, however, is up, and it’s no sure thing that Davis won’t try to cut his pay. Allen’s friends say he would welcome a trade to the Rams and his college coach, John Robinson, and the situation remains uncertain.

Robinson is 33 and highly paid, reportedly getting $700,000 last season. However, he remains the most talented Raider linebacker, if perhaps better outside than in the middle, and was deemed too valuable to leave out in the cold.

Certain to be left unprotected is veteran cornerback Mike Haynes. He is 36, played little last season and wasn’t protected a year ago. Even if no other team is interested, the Raiders probably won’t tender the future Hall of Fame selection a new contract.

Likely to be left off the protected list are safety Vann McElroy and linebacker Linden King.

McElroy was persuaded to renegotiate his contract before the season, giving the team some relief from his full salary in case of injury. He subsequently missed all but five games because of injury--although Davis did pay his full contract.

However, Eddie Anderson, a Davis favorite, took over McElroy’s spot and made several spectacular plays, returning two interceptions for touchdowns and narrowly missing a third.

McElroy, a two-time Pro Bowler, is 30 and might attract interest. Seattle General Manager Tom Flores, McElroy’s old coach, and Seahawk Coach Chuck Knox, a collector of veteran safeties, are reportedly interested.

King was waived in last season’s first cut, but re-signed out of retirement off the beach in Hawaii after Otis Wilson and Emmanuel King flunked trials at his left outside linebacker spot. Linden is 34 and wasn’t protected a year ago. Other veterans who might not be protected include linebackers Ricky Hunley and Emanuel King; safety Russell Carter, who saw Mike Harden moved ahead of him, and center Bill Lewis.

Lewis isn’t likely to complain. he was voted the offensive line’s top player by his teammates in 1988, sued the team in a contract dispute last season and didn’t play a down.
