Sebastian Coe’s 14-year career ended in anticlimax and disappointment today (Friday) when the English star withdrew from the 1,500-meter heats at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand, because of illness.

Coe, 33 and a two-time 1,500-meter Olympic champion, was pulled out of the last race before his retirement by team officials. It ended his record of winning a gold medal in every major championship in which he competed.

Coe managed only sixth place in the 800-meter final--his last race over the shorter distance. He was pulled out of the 1,500 meters because of a sore throat and swollen lymph glands.
