The Philadelphia 76ers won their 12th consecutive game, the longest winning streak in the NBA this season, by defeating the Utah Jazz, 114-89, Monday night at Philadelphia.

The 76ers maintain their share of first place in the Atlantic Division with the New York Knicks, who beat Miami Monday night.

Hersey Hawkins scored 20 points to lead six players in double figures, and Charles Barkley scored 16 in 27 minutes despite a strained leg muscle.

Karl Malone had 29 points for Utah, which lost for only the third time in 14 games.

The tone of the game developed early. Barkley had two steals and four points to spark the 76ers as they scored the last 14 points of the first quarter to lead 35-21.

“We’re clicking on all cylinders right now,” Hawkins said.

New York 116, Miami 107--The Knicks, taking 19 fewer shots than the Heat and getting 16 fewer offensive rebounds, still won at New York to improve to 20-2 at home.

The difference was Patrick Ewing, who blocked a career-high nine shots and scored 18 of his 24 points in the second half.

Charles Oakley scored 24 points and Mark Jackson had 21 points and 12 assists for the Knicks, who shot 58.1% to 43.8% for Miami.

But the Heat stayed close for most of the game with tenacious rebounding and defense. Miami took 105 shots to 86 for New York, beat the Knicks 24-8 on offensive rebounds and forced 23 turnovers to 14.

Seattle 101, Charlotte 100--Olden Polynice had a free throw and tip-in in the final 31 seconds at Charlotte, N.C., as the SuperSonics handed the Hornets their eighth loss in a row.
