Higa Readies for Assault on 1,500th Point

Share

Forward Gabe Higa, the most prolific scorer in Quartz Hill High history, raised his career scoring total to 1,422 points Tuesday night by scoring 18 against Saugus.

Higa, a four-year varsity player who is averaging 23 points a game this season, conceivably could reach the 1,500-point plateau before season’s end.

Easier said than done, however. Only one game remains on Quartz Hill’s league schedule so Higa, who has signed to attend UC Irvine in the fall, will need to post big numbers against playoff opponents.

“I’d like to see him get 1,500,” Coach Don Moore said. “If we can find a pigeon, I’m certainly going to let him score.”

Free throws: Chris Loll of Thousand Oaks has made 70 of 87 free throws (80.5%), including 20 of 22 in three victories last week. . . . Moorpark’s Brian Lester had a streak of 25 successful free throws snapped against Bishop Diego.

Records: Camarillo’s David Harbour hit a three-point basket in the third quarter at Simi Valley on Friday, giving him 626 points and surpassing Gil Banales’ single-season record of 624. . . . With 42 points against Burbank, Hart’s Micah Ohlman eclipsed Steve Valenzuela’s school record of 37.

Shooting: Although it beat Pasadena, 60-59, in double overtime last week, Crescenta Valley missed 17 of its first 18 shots from the field.
