SIDELINES : Hearns’ Brother Sent to Prison
The brother of boxer Thomas Hearns has received a 25- to 50-year prison sentence for killing his girlfriend in his brother’s home.
Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Jessica Cooper sentenced Henry Hearns on Tuesday for second-degree murder.
Hearns, 23, was convicted in November of killing 19-year-old Nancy Barile on June 10 in Thomas Hearns’ home in the Detroit suburb of Southfield. She was shot in the head.
Hearns testified that the shooting occurred accidentally as he tried to wrestle the gun from Barile to keep her from killing herself. But Ricardo Veeder, who was in the home at the time of the shooting, testified that he heard Hearns threaten to kill Barile moments before she was shot.
On the night of the shooting, Thomas Hearns was in Las Vegas preparing for his rematch with Sugar Ray Leonard, which ended in a draw.
