Mock to Run for Equalization Board

Share

Torrance City Councilman Tim Mock has filed to run for the State Board of Equalization, gambling that an FBI investigation of incumbent member Paul Carpenter will improve a challenger’s chances of victory.

Mock said he filed his intention to run 10 minutes before the Wednesday deadline and views his $1,000 filing fee as “a lottery ticket.”

“Right now, it’s just a fantasy world,” Mock said of the possibility that the investigation could lead to an indictment of Carpenter for allegedly accepting a $20,000 donation from a fake company created by the FBI. “I won’t be actively campaigning until something happens with Paul.”

In addition to Mock, six other challengers for the $97,000-per-year seat will appear on the June 5 ballot: Charles Davis of Compton, Long Beach City Councilman Warren Harwood, Fred Chel of Long Beach, Gary Gillan of Monterey Park, Joe Adams Jr. of Burbank and Salomea Honigsfeld of West Hollywood.

The State Board of Equalization administers major tax laws.
