Final eliminations in the National Hot Rod Assn.’s Chief Winternationals will begin at 11 a.m. today after rain postponed the races on Sunday at the L. A. County Fairplex track in Pomona.

Gene Snow, 52, of Ft. Worth, heads a group in the top fuel class. Snow recorded the fastest time a week ago at 4.983 seconds.

Snow won the competition eliminator class, the forerunner of the funny car division, in a Dodge Dart in 1968, and he is among 12 of the 16 finalists 45 or older.

Youth, however, also will be served in the top fuel class, where Darrell Gwynn, 28, and Lori Johns, 24, also are entered.

An extra practice session Friday allowed veterans such as Don Prudhomme, Shirley Muldowney and Eddie Hill to test cars before the finals.

John Force, who set an event record with a run of 5.288 seconds on Saturday, heads the field for the funny car eliminations. Force drove an ’88 Olds Cutlass to eclipse the mark of 5.320 set by Winston champion Bruce Larson last year.

Jerry Eckman of Ventura, driving an ’89 Pontiac Trans Am, is the top qualifier in the pro stock class.
