Hospital officials upgraded from guarded to stable the condition of an 8-year-old Downey girl today after she was struck in the back by a bullet while riding with her family in an open-sided train in Disneyland.

Anaheim police today were trying to determine the source of the small-caliber bullet, which they said was probably fired from outside the Disneyland Park at about 6:40 p.m. Sunday. Investigators said they have not pinpointed a location.

A Disneyland spokesman called the incident “a freak accident.” The train on which the girl was riding was briefly stopped but was quickly put back into service.

Nayeli Diana Plascencia had been riding with her parents in the Disneyland Railroad when she complained of a pain in her back as the train pulled into a stop at the Videopolis station in the Fantasyland section of the park, police and Disneyland officials said.

Plascencia underwent surgery at UCI Medical Center in Orange to have the bullet removed. Today, hospital officials said the girl is in stable condition in the intensive care unit.
