COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Bannon Lifts Moorpark to Baseball Win

Outfielder Chris Bannon was two for four with a double and a run batted in, and left-hander Willie Leighton threw a five-hitter to lead Moorpark College to a 4-2 victory over Antelope Valley in a nonconference baseball game at Moorpark on Wednesday.

Leighton (2-0) struck out five, walked none and allowed one earned run.

Mike Suarez drove in two runs to key a three-run third inning for Moorpark (3-2).

Terry Cruz and Zac Miller each had two hits.

In other baseball games:

Ventura 9, Mission 5--Dain Turner hit a grand slam in the ninth inning for Mission, but it wasn’t enough to stop Ventura in a nonconference game at Ventura.

Chris Romo had two hits, including a double, and the other RBI for Mission (4-2).

For Ventura (4-2), pitcher Mike Teron went the distance in his first decision of the year.

UC Riverside 9, The Master’s 8--Andy Martin drove in two runs for the Master’s, but Paul Gambs (1-0) picked up the win for host Riverside in a nonconference game.

Dan Bevins hit a solo home run for Master’s.

Cal Lutheran 11, Cal Baptist 7--Cal Lutheran came back from a 7-0 deficit in the fifth inning to register a nonconference win at Cal Baptist.

Peter Washington hit a two-run home run for the Kingsmen, and teammate Dave Leonhardt went two for four with two doubles and the game-winning RBI for CLU (3-0).

Leonard Matsumoto also had a double and home run for Cal Lutheran and Kevin O’Neill threw 6 1/3 innings of shutout relief to pick up the win.

Canyons 11, Cal Poly Pomona JV 5-Roland De La Maza gave up a run and allowed two hits in five innings for host Canyons (4-1). Gary Morgan hit a three-run double in the fourth to spark a seven-run rally.

SOFTBALL

Cal State Northridge 1-1, Cal State Long Beach 0-2--Senior right-hander Debbie Dickmann threw a one-hitter in the opener, allowing only a leadoff single in the top of the seventh, to lead the Lady Matadors to a nonconference split at Northridge.

Dickmann (1-1) struck out one and walked none.

In the second game, Long Beach’s Kim Kostyk broke a 1-1 tie with a two-out single in the top of the seventh off reliever Heather Lindstrom (0-2).

Northridge (1-3) managed only five hits in the two games. Long Beach is 1-1.

Canyons 6, Antelope Valley 1--Christine Plasch had two doubles and drove in two runs and Michelle Ruffner (2-0) pitched four innings, surrendering two hits, as Canyons (2-0) stayed unbeaten with a nonconference victory at home.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Westmont 79, Cal Lutheran 63--Jeff deLaveaga scored a game-high 24 points for host Cal Lutheran (5-19, 3-16 in conference play), but the Kingsmen fell to Westmont, ranked 11th in the NAIA national poll, in a District 3 game.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal Lutheran 63, Redlands 49--Senior guard Brenda Lee scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Cal Lutheran (15-8) to the nonconference victory at Redlands. Chris Cox added nine points, and Kristen Smith and Heidi Griffith each scored eight for Cal Lutheran, which led, 35-27, at halftime and steadily pulled away in the second half.

Pomona-Pitzer 68, Occidental 65--Occidental led, 37-31 at halftime, but Pomona-Pitzer tied the score, 39-39, before pulling away in the final minutes to win the SCIAC game at Occidental. Sharon Bruner led Occidental (10-12, 4-4) with 17 points, and Michele Pratt and Jenny Korinko each added 11 points.
