Reliever Mitch Williams agreed to a one-year contract with the Chicago Cubs for $1.125 million. He had been scheduled for an arbitration hearing today.
Williams, who helped the Cubs win the National League East title last season with a career-high 36 saves, had asked for $1.4 million. The Cubs had offered $850,000.
Williams had a 4-4 record and a 2.76 earned-run average in 1989.
