Police sought public assistance Wednesday in investigating the death of a 34-year-old motorist on the Harbor Freeway near downtown Los Angeles. The man was killed when an unknown object smashed through the windshield of his van and struck him in the forehead.

Lt. Bruce Hagerty said investigators hope to determine whether John A. Raff of Los Angeles, a self-employed glass architect, was killed by something thrown from an overpass or struck by an object accidentally hurled up from the roadway.

Hagerty urged motorists and pedestrians who may have witnessed the incident, which occurred about 1:15 p.m. Tuesday near freeway overpasses at 23rd Street or Adams Boulevard, to call detectives at (213) 237-1733 or (213) 237-1774.
