A sewer overflow in Point Loma dumped 17,250 gallons of sewage into the ocean Wednesday, a county official said.
Gary Stephany, director of environmental health, said that at 7 a.m. Wednesday, roots blocked a sewer at Stafford Place and Amiford Drive, causing the overflow. The sewage ran into a nearby storm drain, which empties into the ocean at the foot of Ladera Street.
The spill was stopped 2 1/2 hours later.
Contamination warnings will be posted at the drain for 100 feet on each side for 24 hours. In that time, the sewage will disperse or become diluted, and will leave no heavy concentration of bacteria, Stephany said.
