Moynihan Returns Stipend to Vassar
Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-N.Y.), the focus of daylong protests by students at Vassar College because of a remark characterized as racist, returned a scholastic honor and a $1,000 stipend Wednesday night.
Seventy-five students took over the administration building earlier in the day as about 300 students rallied outside, and later there was a widespread boycott of classes to protest what students said was a broader pattern of racial intolerance on the campus.
The takeover followed accusations Tuesday by Folami Gray, a black local government official, that Moynihan used a racist comment to try to intimidate her at a campus reception Jan. 29.
