HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Pair Totals 80 in RBV Victory

Brad Grubaugh and Darryl Parker combined for 80 points Wednesday night as visiting Rancho Buena Vista defeated No. 2 Mt. Carmel in a Palomar League game, 103-97.

Five Mt. Carmel players scored in double figures, but it wasn’t enough. Shanke Knight led Mt. Carmel with 34 points, Mike Graves had 17, Tom LaBuda 16 and Bill and Ryan Wootton had 14 apiece.

“You’d think with five guys in double figures we ought to be able to win the game,” Mt. Carmel Coach John Marincovich said. “They had a great night, and we basically forgot to play defense.”

Grubaugh had 43 points and Parker added 37 for RBV (13-9, 9-4), which shot 70% (35 of 50) from the floor. RBV also made 30 of 35 free throws.

Mt. Carmel, meanwhile, shot 57% (38 of 66). The Sundevils (18-5, 11-2) fall into a tie for first place with Torrey Pines.

In other Palomar League games:

Torrey Pines 62, San Dieguito 52--Carter Brown scored 18 points, and Bill Scheibe had 15 points and 10 rebounds for No. 4 Torrey Pines (23-3, 11-1) pulled away after it was tied at halftime. Sean Howard and Brian Malewicz each had 19 for the Mustangs (8-15, 3-10).

Vista 90, Orange Glen 70--Brian Smith had 20 points, John Hauser 19 and Jason Barnes 15 for visiting Vista (5-16, 2-12), which set San Diego Section records for three point shots made (15) and attempted (41).

Poway 64, Fallbrook 62 (OT)--Greg Sorrell scored 21 points and Matt Fletcher added 10 as No. 6 Poway (17-5, 8-5), which made two three-point shots in overtime. Travis Teagle had 23 for host Fallbrook (16-9, 7-6).

City Central League

Lincoln 102, Madison 90--It was a big day for Lincoln’s John McCartney. After signing a letter of intent to play football at San Diego State Wednesday morning, he scored 28 points, had 12 rebounds, 10 steals and 10 assists for No. 7 Lincoln. Darryl McMillan scored 16 for league champion Lincoln (18-8, 8-0).

Crawford 76, Hoover 51--Crawford took a 12-0 lead, then outscored visiting Hoover 21-8 in the first quarter. Marc Carter led the Colts with 32 points and 15 rebounds. Zed Hill added 17 for Crawford (16-7, 4-3). Mike Martin led Hoover with 14. Hoover fell to 6-17, 1-6.

City Eastern League

Patrick Henry 60, Serra 47--No. 3 Patrick Henry’s 15-6 second quarter helped clinched the Eastern League at Serra (6-13, 0-7). Butch Reese (14 points) and Danny Kotnik (11) paced Patrick Henry (21-3, 7-0). Serra’s Desi Dixon scored a game-high 20 points.

Mira Mesa 55, Point Loma 54--Point Loma outscored host Mira Mesa, 16-12, in the final quarter, but the Marauders held on. Mark Ziegler (15) and Kal Chatham (12) combined for 27 points and 22 rebounds. Paul Roberson led the Pointers with 15. Mira Mesa improved to 16-8, 5-2; Point Loma dropped to 10-12, 2-5.

City Harbor League

St. Augustine 88, Clairemont 79--Greg Sedlacek scored 19 and Bryan Cantwell and Paul Mossuto had 17 each for visiting St. Augustine (6-19, 5-3). St. Augustine scored 41 points in the fourth quarter, second-most of all time. Sweetwater scored 48 points in a quarter during a game in 1984. Alex Love (23) and Issac Wasserteil (15) led Clairemont.

City Western League

University City 70, Kearny 59--Kearny pulled to within, 55-51, in the fourth quarter, but No. 9 University City scored the next six racing to its first league title in the nine-year history of the school. Jerome Price had 21 points and Anthony Hill 18 for the Centurions (20-3, 7-1). Darnay Scott and Tommy Rawlins had 18 apiece for Kearny (15-10, 3-4).

Mission Bay 59, La Jolla 48--A 17-2 second quarter scoring bonanza allowed Mission Bay (4-15, 2-5) to prevail at home. Wyatt Spencer scored 16 points to lead Mission Bay, and teammate Cameron Atwood added 11. Lupe Estrada finished with 15 for La Jolla (4-17, 1-6).

Avocado League

San Pasqual 73, Oceanside 47--Visiting Oceanside held Eric Meek to a season-low 10 points, but John Koser had 19 and Bryan Banner 13 for No. 5 San Pasqual (17-5, 10-1).

Carlsbad 75, San Marcos 67--Calvin Coleman scored 24 points and Mark Tague had 20 for visiting Carlsbad (8-12, 4-7).

El Camino 87, Escondido 52--Travis Gilley scored 22 points, and Glenn Ankton added 21 to lead El Camino (17-6, 10-1) over Escondido (6-13, 4-8).

Metro Conference

Southwest 80, Mar Vista 55--Devin Patterson had 19 points, Zach Reiff 14 and Joe Cruz 13 for visiting Southwest (8-18, 4-10). Elisha Burns scored a game-high 22 for Mar Vista (2-22, 1-13).

Chula Vista 64, Hilltop 61--Carnell Penn had a game-high 24 points and Jerome Green added 18 for host Chula Vista (20-6, 11-2).

Castle Park 82, Montgomery 58--Castle Park (11-11, 8-6) jumped out to a 27-9 lead after one quarter and 50-21 at the half in victory at Montgomery (3-19, 1-13).

Nonleague

San Diego 60, Morse 51--Deondra Coleman took over after Clark James (18 points, eight rebounds) fouled out, and made three of his four three-pointers in the third quarter. He finished with 22 points for No. 8 San Diego (15-4, 5-2). Jamaar Lavender led Morse with 20 points.

USDHS 68, Marian Catholic 47--Peter Ellis scored 19 points to lead USDHS (14-6) over Marian (8-14).
