SOUTHERN SECTION GIRLS’ SOCCER PLAYOFFS : Mission Viejo Routs University

Share

The Mission Viejo High School girls’ soccer team had too much offense for injury-riddled University, scoring four times in the second half for a 5-0 victory Thursday in a first-round Southern Section 4-A match at University.

The score was tied, 1-1, near the end of the first half when University goalie Kelli Koinoch and teammate Danielle Lesch collided and went down. Koinoch had left the goalie box to go after the ball. Both missed the rest of the game. That presented a problem for Coach Barbara Yeager, because Lesch was University’s reserve goalie.

So Yeager was forced to put Srima Vidanage in goal for the first time this season.

Kenna Bertell scored to begin the second half on a crossover into the corner. Then with Vidanage out of position on the right, Maggie Doherty shot to the left corner to give Mission Viejo (17-4-2) a 3-0 lead.

Charette scored again after Mission Viejo goalie Tamar de Fries kicked the ball to the midfield line, forward Jill Florey took it up the right side and fed Charette a perfect pass in front of the goal.

With less than 10 minutes to play, Florey shot just to the right of a diving Vidanage for Mission Viejo’s final score.

“Any time you can shut out a team this good, you know your defense is doing its job,” Coach Jim Dutton said. “University (10-6-5) finished second in its league (Sea View). And if you can score five goals at the same time, you know your offense is together.”
