A man suffered second-degree burns on his hands and shoulders when he rescued his 1-year-old son from a burning crib, fire officials said.
The fire began about 9 a.m. Friday in an upstairs bedroom at 5855 Balboa Arms Drive in Clairemont. A 2-year-old girl was playing with a lighter when linen on the baby crib caught fire, Fire Department spokesman Larry Stewart said. Her 1-year-old brother, who escaped injury, was in the crib.
Michael McFarland and his wife ran upstairs when the smoke detector went off, Stewart said. McFarland was burned when he took the baby from the crib.
He was treated at UC San Diego Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said. The children were taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital for observation.
It took 25 firefighters about 20 minutes to bring the fire under control. Damage was estimated at $15,000.
