COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Gallego Has Three Hits to Lead UC Irvine’s 10-6 Victory

Chris Gallego had three hits and scored four runs to lead UC Irvine to a 10-6 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills in a nonconference baseball game Friday at Irvine.

Osmar DeChavez had two hits and four RBIs, and Fred Combs and Don Roberson each had two hits and two RBIs each for Irvine. The Anteaters scored two runs in the second and four in the third to lead, 6-0. David Bladow (2-1) allowed four runs in seven innings for the victory for Irvine (4-6). Dominguez is 6-3-1.

In nonconference baseball:

Cal State Fullerton 7, Rice 1--Huck Flener (2-0) struck out eight, walked one and allowed four hits in picking up a complete game victory at Fullerton. The Titans scored two runs in the sixth and seventh inning. Frank Charles went three for three with two doubles and an RBI for Fullerton (6-4). Rice dropped to 5-5.

At the University of Arizona softball tournament:

Cal State Fullerton 7, Oklahoma 1--Missy Coombes doubled and had two RBIs to lead Cal State Fullerton in its third game of pool play. Shireen Campbell got the victory.

New Mexico State 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--The Titans outhit New Mexico State, 6-5. The winners scored once in the first inning and twice in the second.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 6, Rice 3--Irvine, ranked ninth in the nation, won four of six singles and two of three doubles matches at home. Trevor Kronneman won, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, at No. 1 singles and Richard Lubner won, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2 singles.

In nonconference wrestling:

Cal State Fullerton 32, BYU 12--Jeff Maes (126 pounds) and Dan Henderson (167) scored pins to lead host Cal State Fullerton (9-13). BYU is 3-10. Maes pinned Kelton Anderson at the 1:38 mark, and Henderson pinned Dustin Hyatt at 6:01.
