NBA ROUNDUP : Knicks Earn Their Keep When It Comes to Working Overtime

Patrick Ewing scored six of his 41 points in a 16-2 run at the start of overtime as the New York Knicks defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers, 119-108, Saturday night at New York.

New York is 5-0 in overtime games this season and 9-0 since it lost at Boston on Nov. 4, 1988. The NBA record is 11 consecutive overtime wins.

The Knicks improved their home record to 22-2 with their eighth victory in 10 games.

The loss was the second in the last five road games for the Cavaliers, who were led by Mark Price with 24 points. Price hit four three-point shots.

Charles Oakley had 18 points and 18 rebounds for the Knicks, who also got 11 rebounds from Ewing and outrebounded Cleveland, 54-36.

Mark Jackson had a season-high 17 assists for the Knicks and also scored 16 points.

The Knicks started the overtime with six consecutive points for a 107-101 lead. After a basket by Brad Daugherty, who scored 21 points for Cleveland, the Knicks scored 10 in a row for a 117-103 lead with 1:31 left.

Ewing scored 11 points in the fourth quarter and made 10 consecutive shots before missing a turnaround jumper with 27 seconds to play. But Oakley was fouled going for the rebound and made one of two free throws, putting the Knicks ahead, 100-97.

A basket by Price and a free throw from Trent Tucker made it 101-99, setting up Craig Ehlo’s layup with 6.5 seconds left, forcing the overtime.

San Antonio 104, Houston 102--Just when it appeared that the Rockets’ defense had thwarted the Spurs to force an overtime at Houston, Willie Anderson hit a 15-foot jump shot at the buzzer.

Buck Johnson’s basket with 15 seconds to play tied the score, 102-102, and gave the Rockets hope.

San Antonio Coach Larry Brown said the final play was designed for Terry Cummings, who led the Spurs with 22 points.

“We actually did draw it up for Terry,” Brown said. “But he was pushed away and Willie got the shot.”

Otis Thorpe led the Rockets with 33 points and 10 rebounds. Akeem Olajuwon scored 19 points and had 18 rebounds.

The Spurs’ David Robinson scored 19 points and blocked nine shots in his battle with Olajuwon.

Dallas 135, Orlando 108--Rolando Blackman was six for six in the first quarter and Roy Tarpley was five for five as the Mavericks built a 45-31 first-quarter lead at Dallas in their fourth consecutive win and 11th in 13 games.

Tarpley scored 18 points, all in the first half, as the Mavericks moved to six games over .500 for the first time since Jan. 6, 1989. Dallas improved its home winning streak to nine.

Detroit 97, Miami 79--Vinnie Johnson scored 10 fourth-quarter points at Miami and joined Isiah Thomas in leading the Pistons to a franchise-record 11th consecutive victory.

The Pistons scored 36 points in the fourth quarter, after managing only 61 in the first three quarters.

Thomas had 23 points and 11 assists and Dennis Rodman had 18 rebounds.

Miami was led by Tellis Frank, who scored a career-high 24 points.

Denver 126, New Jersey 117--Alex English scored 17 of his season-high 38 points in the third quarter at East Rutherford, N.J., and the Nuggets handed the Nets their 13th loss in a row.

The losses equal the NBA season-high this season, set by the Miami Heat.

Denver ended a three-game losing streak and a run of seven road loses in a row.

Utah 110, Sacramento 106--Karl Malone scored 18 of his 41 points in the fourth quarter as the Jazz came from behind to beat the Kings to win its 15th home game in a row.

The Jazz trailed, 82-74, at the end of the third quarter before Malone scored 11 consecutive points during a 19-11 run that tied the score, 93-93, with five minutes left.

Antoine Carr, who led the Kings with 24 points, then scored six as Sacramento took a 100-98 lead before John Stockton, who had 22 points and 17 assists, scored six points and Malone four in a 10-4 run that gave the Jazz a 108-104 lead with 34 seconds left.
