TENNIS ROUNDUP : Korda Upsets Chesnokov at U.S. Indoor

Petr Korda of Czechoslovakia upset sixth-seeded Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union, 6-2, 6-4, Tuesday in the second round of the U.S. Pro Indoor championships at Philadelphia.

Glenn Layendecker defeated 12th-seeded David Wheaton, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, and Paul Haarhuis of the Netherlands eliminated 16th-seeded Mikael Pernfors of Sweden, 4-6, 7-6 (7-0), 7-5.

Other second-round winners included 11th-seeded Jaime Yzaga of Peru, who will play Korda in the third round, and 13th-seeded Pete Sampras.

Anne Smith used a relentless baseline game to upset fifth-seeded Helen Kelesi, 6-1, 6-2, and No. 8-seeded Nathalie Tauziat wore down Kathy Rinaldi, 7-5, 6-3, to move into the second round of the Virginia Slims of Washington.

The Wightman Cup, an annual event between women’s teams from the United States and England, was temporarily suspended while officials sought a new format to make it more competitive. The United States has dominated for a decade.
