Lou Carnesecca was going to call a timeout, but instead left the game in Boo Harvey’s hands.

Harvey made a three-point basket with eight seconds remaining Wednesday night and St. John’s defeated fifth-ranked Georgetown, 63-62, in a Big East Conference game at Landover, Md.

“I figured I’d call timeout and get something set up, but he had it all the way,” Carnesecca said. “I’m not going to mess with him. . . . That’s the third time he’s done it.”

Harvey had won one game for the Redmen (21-7, 9-5 in the Big East) with a buzzer-beater and sent another into overtime this season.

“I threw it behind my back to my left hand,” Harvey said. “It freed me up for that second to get the shot off.”

But Harvey didn’t do it alone. St. John’s held Georgetown (20-4, 9-4) scoreless for the last 3:11.

“Of all the times we’ve won this year, this has got to rate up there as one of the biggest,” Carnesecca said. “The kids didn’t die.”

The Redmen trailed, 62-56, but scored the last seven points. St. John’s didn’t have the lead until Harvey’s winning basket.

Mark Tillmon missed a three-point shot at the buzzer, allowing the Redmen to avenge a 74-67 loss to Georgetown 18 days earlier in New York. The setback dropped the Hoyas a game behind first-place Connecticut in the Big East.
