GARDEN GROVE : Revised Sign Law Gets Conditional OK
Prevented by constitutional concerns from requiring English on commercial signs in the city but concerned about public safety issues, the Garden Grove City Council gave only conditional approval to a revised sign ordinance.
Meeting Tuesday night, the council voted 4-0, with Councilman J. Tilman Williams abstaining, to approve the first reading of the ordinance, but delayed a second reading until April 2 to give the city staff time to formulate revisions.
Councilman Francis L. Kessler expressed concern over police and fire units trying to find addresses in the city’s Vietnamese and Korean business districts, where some businesses use non-English signs. City codes require a street number at all businesses, but Kessler pointed out that sometimes the numbers are hard to find.
The city staff was directed to return with revisions that would increase the visibility of the addresses.
