Hard-luck hurdler Greg Foster will be sidelined indefinitely after breaking a bone in his foot during a race in San Sebastian, Spain, the third broken bone he has sustained in the past three years.

Foster, the 1984 Olympic silver medalist and two-time outdoor world champion in the 110-meter high hurdles, was injured after winning a race Wednesday. The injury occurred when he stepped in a crack after the race, The Athletics Congress, the national governing body for track and field, reported Thursday.

Foster’s previous broken bones were in his left forearm, the first in 1988, three weeks before the Olympic trials, when he was injured while practicing hurdling, and the second in January 1989 while he was playing basketball.

The latest injury forced Foster’s withdrawal from tonight’s Mobil Indoor Championships at Madison Square Garden. He has won the national indoor championship five times in the past seven years.
