SAN DIEGO SPORTS ET CETERA : Gavaldon Wins in Oklahoma

Angelica Gavaldon of Coronado advanced to the quarterfinals of the Virginia Slims of Oklahoma tennis tournament with a victory Thursday at The Greens Country Club in Oklahoma City.

Gavaldon defeated Peanut Louie-Harper of San Francisco, 6-1, 6-4.

MEN’S TENNIS

The University of San Diego lost only at No. 3 doubles and handed Air Force its first loss of the season, 8-1. At No. 1 singles, USD’s Dan Mattera defeated Tony Kraweitz, 7-6, 7-5. At No. 2, USD’s J.R Edwards defeated Ricky Koda, 6-2, 6-3. In doubles, Mattera and Chris Toomey defeated Kraweitz and Dan Oosterhous, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. USD is 5-2, Air Force 6-1.

BASKETBALL

Hal Mitrovich, the Hoover basketball coach who had hinted of retirement at various times through the season, made it official Wednesday night after his Cardinals lost to No. 1-seeded Torrey Pines, 89-53, in the opening round of the Division II playoffs.

The Cardinals finished this season 5-18, 1-7 in the Central League.

Mitrovich began coaching in the section during the 1961-62 season at St. Augustine and has spent the past 24 years at Hoover.

His teams have compiled a 372-337 record.

BASEBALL

UC San Diego (2-4) opened the SCC Invitational with a loss to NAIA College of Idaho, 9-3. Terrence Woods (1-0) was the winner, Rick Rupkey (2-2) the loser. Hitting stars for the Coyotes (4-0) included Brad Molitor, who went four for five, and Brian Ewing, who was three for six.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Julie Evans scored 30 points and had eight rebounds to lead San Diego State to a 67-54 Big West Conference victory over host UC Irvine.

Crystal Lee scored 11 points and Melanie Usher nine for the Aztecs (5-21, 4-11). UCI (1-25, 0-16) was led by Yvonne Catala with 16 points and six rebounds. SDSU led, 31-20, at halftime.

The University of San Diego tied a school record for victories in a season with 16 by defeating Loyola Marymount, 66-55.

The Toreros last won that many games in 1985-86.

The Toreros also had 16 assists (Cathy Perkins and Molly Hunter led the way with four each), which gives them 434 for the season, a single-season best for a USD team. The previous high was 433 in 1981-82.

Freshman center Chris Enger led USD with 15 points and six blocked shots. Others in double figures for USD were Candida Echeverria (12) and Angie Straub (10).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Christian Heritage ended its regular season with its 10th consecutive victory by defeating Cal Baptist, 64-59. Brad Soucie led Christian Heritage with 27 points.

LACROSSE

Juan Millan had six goals and two assists in UC San Diego’s 14-5 victory over host San Diego State in a West Coast Lacrosse League game. Swen Haynie added five goals for UCSD (6-0, 2-0).

FOOTBALL

The 1989 USD football team, which finished with a 7-2 record and ranked sixth in the NCAA Division III Western Region, has been honored as the 1989 Headliner of the Year for amateur sports by the San Diego Press Club.
