Arkansas ended Texas’ 132-game Southwest Conference winning streak in women’s basketball by winning, 82-77, at Austin, Tex.
Juliet Jackson made six free throws late in the second half as 25th-ranked Arkansas (21-3 overall, 14-1 conference) handed the sixth-ranked Lady Longhorns (20-4, 13-1) their first SWC loss since the conference began formal competition in 1982.
Texas actually had won 183 consecutive games against SWC opponents dating to Jan. 23, 1978, when the Lady Longhorns lost to Texas A&M;, 59-52. The league didn’t sanction women’s sports until 1982.
Said Texas coach Jody Conradt: “It hurts, and it’s going to hurt more in the morning. We have taken pride in the streak.
“If it had to happen, I am glad it happened at home and not on the road where we would have felt alone,” Conradt said.
