WASHINGTON — After months of speculation and rumor that Jack Valenti was about to retire as president of the Motion Picture Assn. of America--with names of possible replacements even being bandied about--it will be announced today that he will be signing a new five-year contract. The chief lobbyist of the movie industry, the 69-year-old Valenti has been president of MPAA for 24 years. He has also achieved some fame as one of the most familiar and frequently seen faces on-stage at Academy Awards night. He is only the third president of the MPAA, founded in 1922.
Valenti, a Texan, was a special assistant to President Lyndon B. Johnson before being sworn in as MPAA president in 1966.
